Together with the majestic silhouette of Pražský hrad hovering behind, Charles Bridge is the most recognizable symbol of Prague. Usually packed with tourist crowds (unless you visit at an early sunrise), this edifice is practically unmissable - it directly connects the Old Town with the Lesser Town, boasting a great many attractions.

It is not the first bridge that stood here - before Charles IV started this monumental construction, Prague citizens and visitors were crossing the Vltava via Judith Bridge, nearly destroyed in the flood of 1342.
Construction of the new bridge lasted until the early 15th century and is associated with a funny legend. The builders used a special technology, which required adding raw eggs to the mortar. Not having enough eggs in Prague, they called out to the entire Bohemia to send this precious material to the capital. Much to everyone’s surprise and amusement, it was sent boiled – as protection from potential transport damage.
Over 500 m long, Charles Bridge used to be part of the Royal Route for Bohemian kings. Moreover, until 1841 it was the only way to cross the Vltava in Prague, which made it very important for European trade.
Today it is a top tourist attraction in itself – flanked by beautiful Gothic towers at each end and lined with eye-catchy statues on each side. Make sure to spot the famous Czech martyr St. John of Nepomuk, which is said to bring luck and make wishes come true!
In the immediate vicinity to Charles Bridge, you will find several lovely sights – such as St. Francis of Assisi Church and Bedřich Smetana Museum. Besides, you can get on board of the Prague Venice cruise and enjoy unforgettable views of the city from water.
