While Sitting high on a hill above the Vltava river, Prague Castle casts a majestic silhouette over the city skyline, visible from almost any spot. Acknowledged by the Guinness Records Book as the largest medieval castle in the world, it is more like a mini-town in the heart of Prague. Founded in the late 9th century, the castle became home to Bohemian kings and queens, remaining the seat of the nation’s political power right until today. It still houses the official presidential residence of the Czech Republic.
Prague Castle is based around three courtyards and features different styles of architecture: Romanesque buildings from the early Middle Ages, Gothic elements and 18th-century reconstructions added during the reign of Queen Maria Theresia. This area was home to both nobility and common people, such as servants, castle guards and even alchemists, so it is not entirely made up of royal residences.
Exploring the Castle’s inviting streets steeped in history, you will see fortification towers, squares, churches, aristocratic palaces, gardens and various picturesque spots. The main highlight is, of course, the breathtaking St. Vitus Cathedral with its richly decorated interiors. The more low-key and ancient St. George’s Basilica provides an interesting contrast, while the vaulted halls of the Old Royal Palace remind of the early glorious days of Bohemia.
Walk along the Golden Lane with its cute tiny houses – once home to castle guards, goldsmiths and even outstanding literary figures like Franz Kafka, take in the magnificent panoramas of the city and don’t miss the ceremonial Changing of the Guard, which takes place daily at noon.
