Reduta Jazz Club is located in Národní Avenue, which is near the National Theatre and a short walk away from Wenceslas Square and Prague’s Old Town. Its interior space is compact and cosy, with sofas of warm red, providing just enough seating for a perfect jazz event atmosphere. Walls are adorned with pictures of eminent musicians, and the Saxophone bar (separated from the main hall) serves a wide range of cocktails and luxury wines, including the delicious Cuvée Reduta.
Interestingly, the venue opened in 1957 - at a time when Czechoslovakia was still under the Communist rule, and since then it has remained the top seat of jazz industry for the entire nation. At the end of the 1980s, Reduta Jazz Club became one of the centres of the Velvet Revolution, and its particular claim to fame is hosting an impromptu saxophone performance by the American president Bill Clinton – the instrument was a gift from the Czech head of state, Václav Havel.
Once you step into the hall, you will immediately feel the continuing spirit of this wonderful music genre, while various vintage touches of the interior will transport you to the golden age of jazz. To complete the immersive experience, at the bar you can have your Pilsner beer poured straight from a “saxophone” pump.
Nowadays Reduta focuses on fusing jazz with modern progressive tendencies, featuring swing, Dixieland, big band compositions, blues, bossa nova, jazz pop and other music styles in their events, played by jazz performers from around the world. Check the programme prior to your visit, usually live concerts start at 19.00 and 21.00, with no strict arrival time.
