History of the castle
Roztoky Castle was built as a fortress on the banks of the Vltava River at the end of the 13th century. A hundred years later, Prague townsmen, brothers Eberhard and Reinhard of Reims, built a new palace with a chapel and at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, the Boryň family of Lhota had the fortress rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau. It has been preserved to this day, including several reconstructions from the 18th century.
In the last century, an English park with rare and exotic trees was established around the castle. It was decorated with sculptures from the 17th-19th centuries and later with works by the sculptor Hedvika Zaorálková.
Central Bohemia Museum
Currently, the Roztoky Chateau houses the Central Bohemia Museum. Its collections illustrate the development of the region from prehistoric times to the recent past and contain valuable archaeological finds from the immediate surroundings of Prague and beyond.
