On the left bank of the Vltava river, in Malá Strana, there is a marvellous Baroque garden offering free access to the public during tourist season. It was built in the 17th century for Duke Albrecht von Wallenstein, who made his name and fortune as the imperial Commander-in-Chief in the Thirty Years War.
The garden is adjacent to the Wallenstein Palace, which now houses the Senate of the Czech Republic, and has a perfect combination of calm, peaceful atmosphere with lots of artistic and natural highlights.
One such spot is called Sala Terrena – a pavilion decorated with marble fountain, frescoes and bronze sculptures inspired by Greek mythology. Also, do not miss the fantastic wall of artificial stalactites, where, if you look closely, you can discern images of animals and some grotesque creatures.
Greenery abounds, the landscaping is formal yet very cosy, and the stately peacocks strolling around add to the incredible charm of the place. You can sit in front of a pond with bright-coloured carps and meditate a little, away from the city buzz.
